Hadoop: Moving Beyond the Big Data Hype Let’s face it. There is a lot of hype surrounding Big Data and adoop, the defacto Big Data technology platform. Companies want to mine and act on massive data sets, or Big Data, to unlock insights that can help them improve operational efficiency, delight customers, and leapfrog their competition. Hadoop has become popular to store massive data sets because it can distribute them across inexpensive commodity servers. Hadoop is fundamentally a file system (HDFS or Hadoop Distributed File System) with a specialized programming model (MapReduce) to process the data in the files. Big Data has not lived up to expectations so far, partly because of limitations of Hadoop as a technology.

Big data applications represent a fast-growing category of high-value applications that are increasingly employed by business and technical computing users. However, they have exposed an inconvenient dichotomy in the way resources are utilized in data centers. Conventional enterprise and web-based applications can be executed efficiently in virtualized server environments, where resource management and scheduling is generally confined to a single server. By contrast, data-intensive analytics and technical simulations demand large aggregated resources, necessitating intelligent scheduling and resource management that spans a computer cluster, cloud, or entire data center. Although these tools exist in isolation, they are not available in a general-purpose framework that allows them to inter operate easily and automatically within existing IT infrastructure.

Secondary DNS (sometimes referred to as multi-DNS) operates in an “always on” manner to complement your existing infrastructure as an additional authoritative DNS service. When an end user’s recursive server initiates a DNS request, both the “primary” DNS service and the “secondary” DNS will respond as soon as they receive the request. The response that reaches the recursive server first will be passed back to the end user, completing their request.
