IT leaders working on customer service projects must display an incredible amount of diligence. An organizationís CRM system has become its lifeline to customers, but as customer needs evolve so has the requirements of CRM. According to Gartner, todayís CRM solution must include a laundry list of capabilities outside its traditional core functionality including: native mobile support of the vendor's customer service and support business applications; real-time analytics; industry-specific functionality and workflow; context mining of voice and text; scalable cloud-based systems; social media engagement; suggested next agent action; multimodal capabilities, such as chat within mobile self-service; and even co-browsing. Gartner surveyed the CRM field and evaluated each vendor including Pegasystems.

Today's systems and servers need an efficient way to move the ever-increasing amounts of data over networks. Many companies have introduced solutions such as TCP/IP Offload Engines (TOE) Network Interface Cards (TNICs), Network Interface Cards (NICs), and iSCSI Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) to solve efficiency and throughout challenges. However, the functionality of these solutions is quite varied, and in some cases, rapidly becoming obsolete.

IP storage using Internet SCSI (iSCSI) provides opportunity for many organizations looking to extend existing Fibre Channel SANs to stranded servers, or looking to deploy Ethernet-based SANs. It can reduce costs by allowing IT managers to take advantage of existing, familiar Ethernet networks. Often the biggest complaint white new technology like iSCSI is its ability to provide more than simple functionality and connectivity.

New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., T‹V) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plantís overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. Download the white paper to learn more.

In the 1990s, client/server was the predominant architecture used to build business applications. The applications had rich functionality, were responsive, and satisfied users' needs. Client/server worked in a time where the only networks were the ones owned and controlled by the enterprise and the only user base was internal.

Class of Service (CoS) functionality can help optimize network performance. For a successful deployment, network designers should identify all applications, understand requirements associated with each application, designate appropriate mapping for groups of applications and provide mechanisms in the underlying network to deliver CoS. CoS mapping and deployment are important; adhering to tested strategies and avoiding common misconceptions helps IT managers advance optimization across the wide area network.
