VMware Horizon® support for published applications provides exciting new opportunities for customers running Citrix XenApp. Tightly integrated with Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS), VMware Horizon is a new option for delivering not just published applications and shared desktops, but also virtual desktops, software as a service (SaaS), and virtualized applications to the devices your end users want to use. This white paper provides guidance for planning and undertaking a migration from Citrix XenApp to VMware Horizon. Four approaches to XenApp migration are detailed, including the major steps required for their implementation. Whether the goal is to migrate an existing XenApp infrastructure to Horizon, replace it with a new system, or simply integrate legacy Citrix infrastructure with your Horizon virtual desktop deployment, VMware has the innovative products and technology you need.

To meet the growing challenges of a competitive world economy, a digital transformation is taking place in the enterprise. Organizations realize that to be competitive they need to be more agile. They need to reach their customers wherever they are, and they need to be able to scale their applications to meet customer demands. To meet these challenges, organizations are deploying new microservice applications that are changing the application delivery environment. These applications are agile, configured to enable new features to be added without disrupting applications in production, and designed to automatically instantiate instances in response to increasing user demand. In short, microservices are drastically changing the way that applications are deployed and managed. This introduces a high level of complexity to network infrastructures because traditional applications are not going away. Applications will continue to be designed for both microservices and traditional 3-tier imple

The world of IT is undergoing a digital transformation. Applications are growing fast, and so are the users consuming them. These applications are everywhere—in the datacenter, on virtual and/or microservices platforms, in the cloud, and as SaaS. More and more apps are now being moved out of datacenters to a cloud-based infrastructure. In order for an optimized and secure delivery of these applications, IT needs specific network appliances called Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs). These ADCs come in hardware, virtual, and containerized form factors, and are sized by Network Administrators based on the current and future usage of applications. The challenge with this is that it’s hard to foresee sizing or scalability requirements for these ADCs since users are constantly increasing, and applications are consistently evolving, as well as moving out of datacenters. Complicating matters, most ADCs are fixed-capacity network appliances that provide zero or minimum expansion capability

Application performance management (APM) is an IT discipline that continues to evolve as new technologies appear. The new wave of microservices architecture and containerization has led to what is referred to as cloud-native development, and this approach has one of the fastest adoption rates of any new technology we have witnessed. With cloud-native environments there is the need to monitor and manage these new types of applications, but the challenge is that they are quite different from traditional monolithic systems. This report delves into what the differences are, how these affect how they are monitored, and how a new generation of vendors have stepped up and introduced novel solutions to meet these challenges. We also examine the incumbent leaders in the APM market that have transformed their solutions to expand and cover cloud-native environments.

What is a digital workspace and what does it take to create one? If we break it down, the workspace is a portal for end users into all of their apps and online services that they canseamlessly and securely access across devices and locations. But what makes the workspace of today different from the desktop or mobile device of the past? And how can you move forward with delivering a digital workspace? Download this solution brief to learn how VMware® Workspace™ ONE™is designed to deliver a digital workspace that integrates device management, application delivery, and identity management into a single platform on your terms, via your data center, in the cloud, or through a combination of the two. This workspace can be accessed by your end users across devices and locations and be centrally secured and supported to streamline management and improve the quality of services you deliver across the entire organization.

Cloud, social, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are increasingly central to business decisions as the pace of digitization accelerates. The impact of software-defined networking (SDN), virtualization, and converged and hyperconverged infrastructure within the datacenter is substantial. These technologies add complexity but offer enticing opportunities for new business models, revenue streams, operating efficiencies, and agility that organizations must pursue if they want to remain competitive and viable. This pursuit requires businesses to keep up with current and emerging technologies and applications and transform the ways in which they conduct business. At the core of "keeping up" is an organization's datacenter strategy — with an associated technology and services strategy that will either create industry laggards or accelerate innovators.

As enterprises work to replicate the development agility of internet companies and innovate in highly competitive markets, application development has grown increasingly complex. The large, monolithic codebases that traditionally power enterprise applications make it difficult to quickly launch new services. Siloed and potentially distributed development and operations teams present organizational alignment problems. On top of this, users are more demanding than ever – enterprises need to scale effectively and monitor deployments to ensure customers are provided with high performance and a consistent experience. Of course, all this needs to be done while providing always-on service availability.

The container revolution is under way today as companies seek to move faster and build digital assets to support growth. IDC forecasts that there will be over 1.8 billion enterprise container instances deployed by 2021. Container platforms will be key to managing the ever-expanding diversity of IT environments (multiple operating systems, hypervisors, private clouds, and public clouds). While containers are the perfect vehicle to underpin cloud-native, microservices applications, containers are also well suited to many existing applications. These applications can reap immediate benefits from being modernized and prepare for possible refactoring over time. To successfully leverage containers in these diverse scenarios and do it at scale, enterprises will need a robust, integrated, and holistic container platform.
